Passport mistakes
Do not mix up the passport you apply with and the passport you travel with
If the ETA is linked to one passport and you travel with another, the record can no longer match what you show at the border. Always check the passport number, nationality and expiry date before submitting.
If your passport has expired or changed, apply again using the new document rather than assuming the old ETA still works.
Photo mistakes
The facial photo must meet the GOV.UK rules
A poor photo is one of the easiest ways to slow the process down. Avoid filters, dark images, small files that do not meet the size rules, and anything that hides the face or adds shadows.
Remember that the passport photo page is not the same thing as the face photo requested by the ETA application.
Travel timing
Do not travel before the confirmation email arrives
The official guidance says you must wait for the confirmation email before travelling. Booking travel around the application rather than the confirmation is a common avoidable risk.
If several people travel together, do not assume all decisions will appear at the same time.
Permission mix-ups
Do not treat ETA as a visa replacement for every trip
An ETA does not guarantee entry, does not let you do activities outside the permitted scope and does not replace a visa when a visa is the correct route.
If you have a criminal record, a previous entry refusal or another circumstance outside the normal ETA route, the official guidance says you may want to apply for a Standard Visitor visa instead.

Check the passport data, the face photo, the travel purpose and the route you actually need. That short review avoids many of the issues travellers only discover after they have submitted.
