NZeTA timing, status checks and changed travel plans

A practical guide to the official timing advice, status checks, passport linkage, levy and changed journeys.

Allow time without treating it as a promise

Immigration New Zealand advises travellers to allow 72 hours for an NZeTA request. Further investigation can take longer, so this is planning guidance rather than a guaranteed decision deadline. Requesting at the airport leaves little room to correct a passport mismatch or follow a different visa route.

Start by confirming that the traveller needs an NZeTA. Visa-waiver visitors, some transit passengers, cruise passengers and Australian permanent residents can have different requirements. Australian citizens have different treatment. Use the official eligibility guidance rather than applying because a booking site displayed the term NZeTA.

Prepare once and check carefully

Use the official Immigration New Zealand website or app. The published NZeTA charge differs between those channels, and the separate International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy applies only where required. An unofficial service may add its own fee without changing government processing.

Before submission:

  1. Use the passport intended for the journey.
  2. Confirm whether the trip is a visit, cruise arrival or transit.
  3. Check names and passport details character by character.
  4. Separate the NZeTA charge from IVL treatment.
  5. Keep the official reference and access to the contact email.

If no immediate result appears, check through the official channel. Do not assume another paid request will accelerate the first one.

What to do when plans change

An NZeTA is linked to the travel document. A replacement passport requires a new authority where the requirement applies. This is true even when the old authority would otherwise remain within its general validity period.

A date or accommodation change does not automatically answer every immigration question. Reassess when the traveller changes passport, nationality, purpose, transit status or length of stay. The existing NZeTA is not a substitute for a visa where the changed journey falls outside the authority's scope.

Check the complete arrival position

NZeTA approval is not entry permission by itself. A traveller can still need to meet onward-travel, funds, health, character and genuine-visitor requirements. Keep the itinerary and supporting information consistent with the purpose stated to the authority.

Families should verify each person independently. A shared booking does not create a shared status, and one delayed request should not be hidden by another person's approval.
