ETIAS is not operational: what travellers should do now
A current-status explanation that separates today’s entry planning from the European Union’s published future ETIAS framework.
Current status: no ETIAS applications
The European Union’s official ETIAS website states that the programme is not currently in operation and that no applications are being collected. Travellers do not need to submit an ETIAS application today, and a website offering to complete an active ETIAS application cannot be using a live official application system.
This status matters more than the planned fee or processing details. ETAApply therefore does not show an ETIAS “Apply” button. It links to official European Union information and keeps Finder results in the official-review category while the programme is unavailable.
What ETIAS is planned to be
ETIAS is planned as a pre-travel authorisation for many visa-exempt non-EU nationals visiting participating European countries for short stays. It is not intended to be a visa. The future authorisation is expected to be linked to the travel document and valid for up to 3 years or until that document expires, whichever comes first.
The published short-stay framework is normally up to 90 days in any 180-day period. That is a stay limit, not permission to work or live in Europe. National and Schengen entry rules, visa requirements and border decisions remain separate.
The official EU information currently describes a planned EUR 20 fee. It also describes expected fee exemptions for applicants under 18, over 70 and certain qualifying family members. Those details explain the future framework; they do not make the service operational.
Do not pay an unofficial application site
The safest check is simple: the official EU source says that no applications are being collected. Do not provide a passport scan, personal history or payment information to a site claiming that it can obtain an active ETIAS now. Do not treat a waiting-list payment as a government application.
When the programme launches, the official website is expected to provide the application route and announce the start date in advance. ETAApply will require a new source verification before changing programme status or exposing an application link.
What travellers should check today
Current entry requirements still apply. They vary according to passport, destination country, purpose, stay length, residence status and personal circumstances. A traveller who needs a Schengen or national visa today cannot use the future ETIAS framework as a substitute.
Check the official authorities for every country on the itinerary, particularly when the journey includes work, study, family residence, long stays or transit outside a normal visitor route. Airline requirements and passport-validity rules can also differ from the future ETIAS question.
What will change after launch
Once the European Union confirms operations, ETAApply must recheck the status page, official application route, fee, exemptions, processing information, travel-document rules and eligible traveller categories. Only then should the Finder or destination guide present an actionable ETIAS application path.
An eventual ETIAS approval will not guarantee entry. The official EU guidance states that border authorities retain the admission decision. Travellers should still carry the passport linked to the authorisation and evidence supporting the planned stay.
Until launch is confirmed, ETAApply’s result remains intentionally cautious: read the official EU guidance, follow the current rules for the destination, and do not submit an ETIAS application or payment through an unofficial service.
